Why You Should Only Learn Real English

みなさんこんにちは。

Hi. Today I will tell you about Megdelio-- and Rule
Number 6 for speaking English easily.

**How To Understand Native Speakers

Megdelio studied English for 5 years in Venezuela.
Teachers said he was an advanced student. Megdelio
always did well on the tests at school.

When he came to the USA, therefore, he felt good.
He thought he would easily talk with Americans.
He was excited to meet Americans. He was ready.

But when he met his first American, everything changed.
The man shook his hand and said, "Howya Doin".
Megdelio was confused. He said, "Pardon me?" The man
said, "Howya Doin". Megdelio was still confused.
He felt embarrassed.

During the next few weeks, this happened many times.
In his first English class, Megdelio had learned that
Americans say, "How are you?" when they meet.
But no Americans said that. They said,
"Whassup" or "Whatcha doin" or "Hey" or "Howzit goin".

The schools and textbooks in Venezuela never taught him
these phrases. He was confused.

**Textbook English Is Not Real English

Textbooks and schools do not use real English.
In textbooks everyone says, "How are you? I'm fine, and
you?". In English school, the teacher pronounces every
word separately and clearly.

But in real life, English speakers do not do this.
English speakers never pronounce words separately.
And they do not use textbook English. Americans never
say, "I'm fine, and you?"

If you learn from textbooks and English schools, you
will have a big problem when you speak to native
speakers. You willnot understand them.

This happens to my students in San Francisco. They
come here. They think they know English. But they do
not know real English. They only know textbook English.

Because of this, they cannot have a simple conversation
with an American. They become very embarrassed and
upset. Some of them go home. Some stay in their
apartments and never make American friends.

**You Must Learn Real English

When he joined Effortless English, Megdelio was very
upset. He didn't know what to do.

I told him to throw away his textbooks. I taught him to
use only real English materials. "Real" materials are
made for native speakers, not English students.

I told Megdelio to learn only from real English books,
movies, TV shows, comic books, audio books, articles,
newspapers, magazines, and podcasts. This is the only
way to learn the real English that native speakers use.

You must listen to what they listen to. You must watch
what they watch. You must read what they read.

Megdelio listened to my articles and my stories. He
also read American children's books. I told him to
watch a children's TV show called "Blues Clues" everyday.

After 2 months, he could easily understand. He then
listened more difficult things.

He also listened to my movie lessons- using the movie
"Hitch". Everyday he listened to the lessons.
Every week, he watched the movie.

After 6 months, he could speak easily with any native
speaker. He was not embarrassed. He was relaxed and
powerful when speaking English.

**Only Use Real English Materials

You must only use real English materials if you want to
understand and speak easily. No textbooks.

Start by using children's TV shows and children's books.

Find children's books on CD. Listen everyday. Then
listen to adolescent books on CD (for ages 10-14).
Listen everyday.

Next, find books on CD for High School age native
speakers. Watch popular TV shows such as "Lost".
In the beginning, use the subtitles. Watch the same
episode many times. Many, many times.

And finally, watch English language movies. Watch each
scene many times... first with subtitles, later without
subtitles.

Stories, TV shows, and Movies use the real vocabulary
and the real pronunciation that native speakers use.

By using only real English materials, not textbooks,
you can understand native speakers easily... and speak
easily.

**The Final Rule

In the next email, I will tell you the final rule.
I'll teach you how to speak 2-3 times faster.

Save these emails. Share them. Follow my advice.
Use all of the rules. I guarantee you will succeed.

Good luck with your English learning,

The Simple Method For Learning Grammar

Hi. Today I want to tell you about a Japanese girl named
Miyuki.

Miyuki did very well on grammar tests. She knew all of
the grammar rules. She knew English verb tenses.
She had the best grammar score in her class.

But Miyuki had a problem. She couldn't actually use the
grammar in a real conversation. She could explain the
simple past tense, but when speaking, she would say
"Yesterday I go to school".

Miyuki was confused. How could her grammar test scores
be so good, but her speaking be so bad?

I taught her the answer: You don't need to "know"grammar,
you need to "feel" grammar.

**Michael Jordan Didn't Learn From Books

Micheal Jordan was the greatest basketball player ever.
How did he learn to play so well? Did he study books
about basketball? Did he memorize the rule book?
Did he focus on explaining basketball?

Of course not. Jordan learned by doing. He learned
by watching great players and copying them. He learned
by using his basketball skills. And he learned by
focusing on the most important skills--the basic skills.
In an interview, Jordan said that he still practiced
free throws every day.

Free throws are the easiest shot in basketball.
Why would the greatest player in the world still
practice them? Because Jordan knew that basic skills
were the most important. He never stopped practicing
them.

Michael Jordan wasn't good at studying basketball,
he was good at playing basketball.
He didn't "know" basketball, he had a deep and powerful
"feel" for playing it.

**Miyuki Changed To The Michael Jordan Method

After joining Effortless English, Miyuki changed her
study methods. She stopped studying grammar rules.

Instead, she focused on the most important basic grammar
skills. I taught her to focus on only the most common
verb tenses: the simple past, the present, the perfect
tenses, and the future.

80% of English speech uses these tenses.
They are the most important.

**Miyuki Did Not Memorize

Miyuki learned this basic grammar using stories. How?

First I gave her a short story in the present tense.
She listened to it everyday. Once she understood it
easily and automatically, I gave her the exact same
story-- but this time it started with "10 years ago...."
She learned to "feel" the past tense by listening to
this story. She never studied rules.

Next, I gave her the exact same story.
This time, it started with "Since 2004..."
Miyuki learned to feel the perfect tenses by listening
to this story. She never studied or memorized grammar
rules. She just listened to each version of the story
2-3 times every day.

Finally, I gave her the exact same story... beginning
with "Next year". She learned to "feel" the future
tense simply by listening to this story many times.

***Point Of View Mini-Stories

I call these story versions "Point Of View Mini-Stories".
They are the most powerful way to get a feel for English
grammar-- and to use correct grammar automatically.

You must learn grammar by listening to real English.
The best way is to listen to the exact same story...
told in different times (points of view).

**How You Can Do This

How can you do this? First, find a short simple story
in the present tense. Then ask a native speaker to
write the story again, using different beginning phrases:

"10 years ago...."
"Since 2004....."
"Next year......."

Next, ask your friend to read these stories and record
them.
Listen to each version everyday. 2-3 times everyday.
Continue to listen until you "feel" each story version.
Continue to listen everyday until the phrases and
grammar go deep.

Then you will be able to use English grammar when
speaking. Then you will be able to use English grammar
automatically when you speak.

**How To Learn Real English

In the next email, I will tell you how to avoid textbooks
and learn only real English. I'll tell you how to learn
the English that we really speak-- not what you find in
books and schools.

Save these emails. Follow my advice.
If you use the Effortless English system, I guarantee
you will succeed.

Good luck with your English learning,

Slow, Deep Learning Is Best

Hi.

When you speak easily and fluently, it feels great.
The words come out quickly. You don't need to think or
translate. You feel totally comfortable using English.
You feel relaxed. Communication is fun and easy.

**Hyun Discovers Rule Number 4

Hyun is a very serious student. While studying English
in Korea, she memorized the definitions of 50,000 English
words. Fifty Thousand!

Her problem was, she couldn't use them. She could easily
pass an English vocabulary test. But she could not
understand native speakers. And she couldn't use all
of those words in a conversation. Hyun was a good test
taker, but a terrible English speaker.

With Effortless English, Hyun learned how to instantly
understand spoken English and how to automatically use
vocabulary. After 6 months using the system, she could
speak quickly and easily. She didn't have to translate.
She didn't have to think. She became a fluent speaker.

**Slow, Deep Learning Is Best

It is useless to memorize thousands of words if you can't
understand them instantly in a conversation... and if you
can't use them automatically without thinking.

The secret to speaking easily is to learn every word and
phrase deeply. Its not enough to know a definition.
You must plant the word deep into your brain.

To speak English easily, you must go slower. You must
repeat each audio lesson and article many times.
You should repeat each lesson 2-3 times every day.
You should do this for one week. That's right, only
one lesson per week.

This is the key to learning deeply.
This is the key to speaking automatically, without
thinking or translating. You must learn English deeply.

Each time you listen to a lesson, you are closer
to instant understanding and automatic speaking.

**Deep Learning Of Grammar

What about grammar? How do you learn it deeply,
without studying and memorizing grammar rules?

I'll tell you how in the next email.

Until then, take care and enjoy your English learning!

"Speak English Easily Using The Effortless English System"

For a Price So Low You Won't Believe It!

by A.J. Hoge, Director of The Effortless English Program

Why do you read English so easily -- but you can't speak English well? Do you feel uncomfortable when you try to speak English? Are you tired of teachers that criticize and bore you? Are you sick of studyng grammar and vocabulary lists? Are you angry that you still can't speak English?

You want to speak English quickly and fluently. You have studied many years, and you still can't speak well. You have tried so many schools, textbooks, and teachers... but still, no success.

If you read just one article about how to speak English, this is it. Read all of this article and change the way you study English.
"Translation from one language into another is a harmful approach because it slows down communication. The research shows that translation and grammar study do not work for most students"
-- Dr. James Asher
If you are learning English to...

*speak with native speakers
*improve your conversation ability
*understand English TV and movies
*make new English speaking friends

... you need to stop using schools and textbooks and find a better way.

What is the most important secret for learning to speak English? What is the secret that English schools never tell you?

Listen closely.

Secret number one is this: Never study English grammar. That’s right. Never!

This is exactly the opposite of what schools tell you, right? From the time you started learning English until today, you have probably focused on grammar. You have memorized grammar rules. You have read grammar textbooks. Your teachers taught you that grammar was the key to English.

They were wrong. Totally wrong.

I live in Mexico City and I listen to Effortless English on my ipod. I want to thank you for the excellent work you are doing. In fact I used to study a lot of grammar and did not focus on listening skills.

After listening to your episode named "Why grammar is bad" I changed my mind and I started to listen more and more. My pronunciation and fluency have improved!

Last week I was in Cleveland, USA. I was talking with real native speakers! My experience with the English language was really good-- I really could express many emotions and ideas."

José Antonio Abraján Pérez
Ernst & Young, Business Tax Compliance (BTC)
jose.abrajan@mx.ey.com

Here are a few things you'll learn when you join Effortless English:

* Why 95% of English schools fail -- how they break rules of English learning -- and fail to teach their students to speak fluently.

* Why grammar study does not work -- and why it can kill your speaking ability.

* How to increase your vocabulary -- and use it when speaking.

* How to understand more -- and then speak English fluently.

When you study correctly, you cannot fail.

"If you want to become like a native speaker of another language you don’t have to do it when you are a child-- you need to do it like a child."
--Dr. J. Marvin Brown

The True Power of Language Learning

Grammar is not the key to speaking English fluently. Listening is the key to speaking English.

The best English learners are children, of course. Why? Because they don't study grammar and they don't learn from textbooks. They learn first from listening-- then later from listening plus reading. This is called a "Listen First" approach, and it is very powerful. Very, very powerful!

If you use this method, you will learn excellent pronunciation. You will learn vocabulary quickly and easily. You will understand grammar automatically- without memorizing it. You will not translate when you listen or speak. You will speak English with speed, power, and confidence!

Why Most Students Fail

There are many students who know grammar rules, but very few students can actually speak English. Most speak slowly and badly.

Teachers tell you the best way to learn English is to study grammar. Wrong! Don’t do it.

Here's a surprise: Students who study grammar are usually worse at speaking English. That's because grammar rules confuse them. Children don't learn English by studying grammar- you shouldn't either.

"Did you know that grammar study can actually kill your English ability?"

Why? Because grammar study makes you think about English, instead of speaking automatically. What you want to do is speak English easily, without thinking. You want to speak quickly and easily.

To speak well, you must first understand native speakers. Your listening skills must be excellent. If you improve your listening, your speaking will automatically improve. Listening is absolutely the number one secret to speaking English well. Focus on listening first, and you are guaranteed to succeed. You cannot fail.

"Students who spent just thirty minutes a day listening to English and reading, did better than students in traditional classes-- not only on listening comprehension tests, but also on speaking tests."
--P. Lightbown & N. Spada (1993)

The research is clear-- students who Listen First are better speakers than students who use textbooks and study grammar. This research has been repeated again and again. In every country, in every possible situation, students who learn by listening always win against students who study grammar. Always!

Research by Dr. Stephen Krashen, Dr. James Asher, Dr. Ashley Hastings, Dr. Brenda Murphy, Lightbown and Spada, Blaine Ray, and Dr. J. Marvin Brown all show the same results-- Listen First students learn faster and speak better than students in normal English classes.

"The most important variables (factors) for language learning are understandable input (listening and reading) and having a good relationship with speakers of the language"
--Dr. Stephen Krashen

Secrets of an English Teacher

My name is A.J Hoge. I have a Masters degree in Teaching English (TESOL).

I started teaching English 10 years ago when I worked in Korea, teaching children. Over the past 10 years, I've taught both children and adults. I've taught at Universities in The United States (Lanier Technical College), Thailand (Thammasat University), and Japan (Hirodai University).

When teaching in Japan, I saw that most students learn slowly. After 5 years of English study, they could not speak English. They could not communicate. They could not understand me. For them, English was painful and difficult.

But I also saw a few different students. These few learned quickly. They understood me and could speak well. They talked to me easily. Their pronunciation was better. They enjoyed English. Their grammar was better, their vocabulary was better, their test scores were better.

"During the time that he was an instructor at Lanier Technical College, A.J. proved himself to be most capable and effective."
-- Flo Smith, ESL Director, Lanier Technical College

What is the secret? Why do a few students do so well, while most fail? Listen First is the secret. The students who Listen First method always succeed. Always!

In October 2006, I started my own English teaching program. I wanted to help students speak English fluently. I wanted to help students learn a better way.

"A.J. is an enthusiastic and energetic teacher. I highly recommend A.J."
--Dr. Brenda Murphy, Shenandoah University
The Birth of Effortless English

I started my English teaching program because most schools fail. They fail their students. They force students to study grammar. Most students at English schools will never learn to speak English well. Never. They will study years, and never be able to communicate.

I wanted to help learners like you speak English-- naturally and fluently. I wanted to help English students be successful.

I used all of my teaching and research knowledge and made ...

... Effortless English -- an English class that uses only real English articles, movies, books, and audio (sound). Effortless English is a Listen First class.

Effortless English uses research secrets that work-- you won't find them in textbooks. You won’t find them in schools.

Here's what I give in my program:

* The incredible Way to Learn Vocabulary and Grammar Without Study-- TPRS. TPRS is "Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling". It is a simple but amazing technique for teaching English speaking & grammar-- without grammar study! That’s right, you learn grammar without memorizing grammar rules-- the same way native speakers learn it.

* The "Overlearning" method that helps students use English automatically.

* How to use real English movies and audio to increase vocabulary, understanding, and grammar-- without memorizing!

* How to learn English in a relaxing way by listening to interesting articles about interesting topics.

* How my best students learn, how they study -- and how they learn English faster than other students.

* How to avoid grammar study and instead learn grammar like children-- naturally.

*How to raise your iBT TOEFL Speaking and Listening scores 20%, 30%, --or even 40%

* Why pronunciation is very important-- and how to improve it.

"A.J., thanks so much. Before taking your course, my English was terrible. I had no confidence. I didn't think I could learn English, ever. Now I'm learning fast. I feel confident and I love English. Compared to my classmates at school, I'm learning much faster than them."
-–Atsuko, student in Hiroshima, Japan

Learn English Whenever and Wherever You Want

You can benefit from my system in a most convenient way. I've made The Effortless English Club -- to help you, so.....

* you can learn to speak English easily and automatically;

*you can learn anywhere and anytime you want.

Learning with Effortless English is easy. You listen to my English lessons 1 hour every day. These lessons are interesting-- no boring textbook activities. Instead, you listen to lessons that use real articles, real letters, real conversations, and real movies. That is the key-- 1 hour a day of Effortless English lessons.

This method is powerful! You will learn 5 times faster than you did in school. You will learn to speak English, not just read it. You will learn to communicate quickly and easily. Effortless English gives you English speaking power.

"Those students who focus on intense listening first, and do not force speaking, end up as near native."
--David Long, Director of Automatic Language Growth

Angelina's Story

みなさんこんにちは。
いつもブログを読んでいただき、ありがとうございます!

本日は5月12日発行のニュースレターを紹介すると共に、ニュースレターの中で紹介したAngelina's Storyをポドキャストにしました。是非アクセスして聞いてみて下さい!Angelina's Success

では、5月12日発行のニュースレターより、

A few days ago, you asked for information about the
Effortless English learning system.

During the next several days, you will receive suggestions about how
to study English in a powerful way. You will learn how to finally
speak English easily and fluently

**Why Grammar Study Is Bad
In school, teachers told you to study grammar. They told you that
grammar was the key to learning English. They were totally wrong.

In fact, studying grammar rules is the worst thing to do. Grammar
study will destroy your English fluency.

Why? Because grammar study forces you to think too much. You
don't want to think about speaking English, you want to speak
quickly-- without thinking or trying. You want to speak English
like a native speaker.

**Angelina's Story

One day, a student from Paraguay came to my class. She could not
speak English. In her home country, she had studied many years--
mostly grammar. But she could not speak.

The first day in my class, she was shy. She came with a textbook,
ready to do what she had always done-- ready to study grammar.

I surprised her-- because I never used the textbook.

Instead, I told her a story. I told the story several times. As
I told the story, I asked many questions. She answered them- a
little shyly. She was confused,... Why was this crazy teacher
telling her a story and asking so many questions!?

Then I asked her to tell the story to me-- she was shocked and
amazed-- she could do it!

After just two weeks in my class, her friends noticed a big
improvement in her speaking. They asked her, "What are you doing?
How are you improving so quickly?"

**Stop Studying Grammar

Angelina finally started to improve speaking when she
stopped studying grammar. This is your first step. Stop studying
grammar. Right now. Stop. Put away your grammar books and
textbooks. You don't need them anymore. Don't think anymore about
English grammar.

**The Effortless English Club

At the Effortless English Club, we learn English without grammar
study. Members improve their speaking quickly. They improve their
listening ability. And yes, their grammar improves too.

The system is powerful. It works. Its guaranteed.

If you are ready, join our exclusive group of motivated learners.
Finally learn to speak English fluently.

Effortless English

*The Vital Secret For English Learning Power

In the next email, I will discuss the most important secret to
speaking English fluently. And over the next few weeks, I will send
more suggestions.

Save these emails. Read them carefully. Follow my advice.

I guarantee your success.

Take Care,

"I live in Mexico City and I listen to Effortless English on my ipod. I want to thank you for the excellent work you are doing.

In fact I used to study a lot of grammar and did not focus on listening skills. After listening to your episode named "Why grammar is bad" I changed my mind and I started to listen more and more. My pronunciation and fluency have improved!

Last week I was in Cleveland, USA, taking a training there regarding taxes. I was talking with real native speakers! My experience with the English language was really good-- I really could express many emotions and ideas-- and even talk about tax topics!"

Effortless Englishより、

Don't Translate (Thursday, May 03, 2007)

Yuriko is an excellent student. She has the best English skills in my class.

Yuriko is an excellent writer. She writes very well in English. I have always been impressed by the skill of her writing.

So I was very surprised today when she gave me an essay. The writing was not so good. I was confused. Normally her sentences are very clear-- very easy to understand. But this time, I had a lot of trouble understanding what she was trying to communicate.

I kept thinking, "Why is this essay different than her others? Why is this one so much worse?"

Finally, I had an idea. I asked her, "Did you write this first in Japanese, and then translate it?"

She said, "Yes". Yuriko wanted this essay to be good. So she wrote it first in Japanese and then translated it. She probably thought this would make it better. Instead, it made it much worse.

By translating, Yuriko stopped thinking in English. She lost her natural "Feel" for English. Her grammar is normally excellent, but in this essay, it was not good. Her sentences are normally clear, but in this essay they were very confusing.

Yuriko's English got worse because she was translating instead of using her normal natural English ability. I told her, "Next time, don't write the essay in Japanese first. Just write it in English directly. When you do that, your writing is always very good."

This is also true of speaking. If you learn by translating, your English grammar and fluency will always be bad. You will always be speaking your native language-- using English vocabulary. Your speech will be slower, more confusing, and harder to understand.

Skip translation. Don't do it. When you study English-- listen to English. Read English. Listen to things that are easy for you. Read English books and articles that are easy for you. Over time, you will understand English naturally and easily, without translation. After a bit more time, you will start to speak more naturally and easily. Your grammar will improve-- because you will have a "feel" for English grammar instead of trying to remember rules and translations.

To learn English, listen to English and read English.... do not translate.

今日は5月3日発行の無料のニュースレターより、Feel The Grammarをお届けします。

Feel The Grammar
spacer (1K)
In the movie "Star Wars", Luke's master tells him to "feel the force".

His message is: Don't think about fighting, feel it and act quickly and naturally.

That's exactly what you should do with grammar. Most students think about grammar. They analyze it. The try to memorize grammar "rules". They study the names for different grammar points. They talk about grammar, think about grammar, take tests about grammar. They know more about grammar than most native speakers.

But they can't USE grammar correctly. Even though they "know" the rules, they still use the wrong verb tense when they speak. They "know" grammar, but they don't FEEL it. Perhaps you have this problem. Maybe you have studied English grammar for many years. Maybe you know all of the rules very well. But when you speak, you still make the same mistakes.

The truth is, unless you want a PhD. in English Linguistics, you don't need to "know" the grammar rules. In fact, thinking about grammar will hurt you. The more you think about grammar, the worse you will speak. You will actually make MORE grammar mistakes.

To USE grammar correctly, you must follow the Star Wars method. You must learn to feel the grammar. Dr. Stephen Krashen calls this "a feeling for grammatical correctness". Native speakers have it-- you want it.

How do you get it? How do you learn to feel correct grammar? How do you learn to use correct grammar instantly and automatically, without thinking?

The best way I know is to listen to Point of View (POV) stories every day. A POV lesson is a story that is told with many different kinds of grammar. For example, the same story is told in the present, in the past, in the future, etc. You listen to each version many times. You notice how the verbs and phrases change-- but you don't think too much.

Rather, you gradually get a feel for the grammar. Eventually, you will begin to use correct grammar when you speak-- automatically. You won't have to think about it.

So, listen to Point of View mini-stories everyday. Listen to each version many times. Your grammar will improve automatically.

You will learn how to FEEL English grammar.

Good Luck!
